Capcom has officially announced the revival of the legendary Onimusha series with a new installment titled Way of the Sword, set to launch in 2026. As the first mainline entry in over 20 years, the game is already stirring excitement among fans and industry watchers alike.
Breaking away from modern trends like open-world exploration and Soulslike gameplay, project director Satoru Nihei has confirmed that the upcoming title will stay true to the core spirit of the franchise.
Something Different, Yet Just as Captivating
Way of the Sword introduces legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi as its new protagonist, modeled after the iconic actor Toshiro Mifune. Securing the rights to use Mifune’s likeness took nearly two years—an effort that highlights the team’s deep respect for the cultural and visual legacy of the series.
Director Satoru Nihei confirmed that, rather than following the trend of expansive open worlds, the game will embrace a linear structure. This choice is meant to preserve the intense pacing and immersive atmosphere that fans have long associated with Onimusha.
Blending Innovation with Tradition
Way of the Sword will introduce new combat mechanics—Deflect and Redirect—designed to add a more tactical layer to battles, especially during intense boss fights. These mechanics focus on draining an enemy’s stamina bar, opening the way for a powerful new move called Break Issen, an evolution of the franchise’s iconic finishing strike.
Despite these additions, Capcom has reassured fans that classic elements like the traditional Issen attacks and the Oni Gauntlet will remain intact, preserving the core gameplay and identity that long-time players know and love.
Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future
Way of the Sword aims to captivate both longtime fans and newcomers alike, blending a fresh perspective with the timeless spirit of the Onimusha series.
With its release slated for 2026, anticipation is building as fans eagerly await how Capcom’s bold vision will unfold in this long-awaited return.
